Up to 17 m off metal at just 0.88 mm thickness – RFID for returnable logistics
Returnable packaging – bins, crates, pallets and totes – forms the backbone of modern closed-loop logistics. Its economic value, however, only unfolds when every individual carrier can also be identified reliably. The Xerafy POD TRAK line delivers a coherent UHF RFID carrier tag family engineered specifically for the requirements of returnable transport packaging. The three variants POD TRAK 60, POD TRAK 85 and POD TRAK 115 cover form factors ranging from 60 mm to 115 mm in length, with off-metal read ranges spanning 6 m up to an impressive 17 m – values that were hardly achievable in such a low-profile build until now. If you operate a UHF | RAIN – RFID reader at goods receipt, cross-docking gates or return stations, this line is the right extension of your capture strategy.
All three variants are powered by the NXP UCODE 9 IC with 96-bit TID and 96-bit EPC. The UCODE 9 is a modern IC generation with particularly high sensitivity – an advantage that translates directly into higher read rates at gate reads with high tag throughput and at sorting facilities. The global 860–960 MHz band ensures that the same tags work in Europe, North America, Asia and Latin America without modification – a tangible advantage for internationally rotating returnable pools.
At just 0.88 mm build height, the POD TRAK tags are remarkably thin and can be integrated into tight recesses or lateral notches on containers without protruding or interfering with stacking. The PVC housing combines mechanical stability with strong printability – an important point, as these tags often carry not only the RFID function but also barcodes and human-readable plain text information.
The following part numbers are available in the IDCRAFT online shop – each variant is designed for a specific use case:
- X6020-GLC01-U9 – Xerafy POD TRAK 60 in the global configuration for 860–960 MHz with NXP UCODE 9 IC. Compact form factor 60 x 20 x 0.88 mm at 2.40 g, off-metal read range up to 6 m, IP68 rated. The most compact variant for small bins, totes and reusable boxes with limited mounting area.
- X8522-GLC00-U9 – Xerafy POD TRAK 85 in the global configuration for 860–960 MHz with NXP UCODE 9 IC. Form factor 85 x 22 x 0.88 mm at 2.80 g, off-metal read range up to 10 m, IP68 rated. The balanced mid-range variant for standard returnable packaging, crates and mid-size containers.
- X1113-GLC01-U9 – Xerafy POD TRAK 115 in the global configuration for 860–960 MHz with NXP UCODE 9 IC. Elongated form factor 115 x 13 x 0.88 mm at 2.80 g, off-metal read range up to 17 m, IP68 rated. The long-range variant for pallets, large containers and applications with long-distance gate reads.
All three variants share an operational temperature range of −40 °C to +55 °C, a survival temperature of −40 °C to +70 °C, IP68 protection and the identical mounting options: rivets, screws, cable ties or industrial adhesive. That lets you deploy the same tag type flexibly across different container shapes and materials. Technical Highlights
- EPC Gen2 / ISO/IEC 18000-63 compliant – works with all common UHF RFID readers and reader platforms
- NXP UCODE 9 IC with 96-bit EPC – modern IC generation with high sensitivity for dense-tag capture
- Off-metal read ranges of 6 m / 10 m / 17 m – scalable to container size and read distance
- Global 860–960 MHz band – the same tag for rollouts in Europe, the USA, Asia and Latin America
- PVC housing at just 0.88 mm thickness, IP68 rated – approved for high-pressure cleaning in container wash lines
Applications
- Returnable logistics – RFID identification of bins, crates and pallets in closed-loop systems
- Food industry – end-to-end capture of returnable packaging at wash and return stations
- Transport asset tracking – inventory management of transport containers and logistics equipment
- Totes and containers in e-commerce – dense-tag capture at sorting and dispatch stations
The POD TRAK line provides the flexibility to roll out a consistent returnable identification strategy across different container sizes. Instead of mixing manufacturers, form factor concepts and IC platforms for each container type, you get the same NXP UCODE 9 chip, the same PVC material and the same mounting principles across all three variants – which significantly simplifies encoding, middleware configuration and warehousing.
Thanks to their EPC Gen2 compliance, all three tags integrate seamlessly into existing UHF | RAIN – RFID infrastructures. They work reliably with fixed readers at goods receipt and return gates, tunnel antennas above sorting facilities and forklift-mounted as well as mobile handheld scanners. There is no need to swap reader hardware or rework middleware – you simply pick the variant with the read range that matches your container size and read distance.
The low-profile design at just 0.88 mm thickness offers another practical advantage: the tags can be printed with barcodes and plain-text information without issue, enabling hybrid capture during the transition from classic barcode to RFID tracking – important in supply chains where not every station is yet RFID-enabled.
